Day 1 in San Diego

I've started my summer road trip, this time in California!  Had a great visit with Jonathan Strohl '91 to start things off on a super note.  Tonight, I'll visit with John '94 and Caroline Cothern.  I hope the Guilfordians I meet along the way will have time to ponder the following questions, posed from faculty and staff members.  We want alumni to be partners in the co-curricular education of our students, and hope these questions will motivate alums to think about ways they can do just that.
  •  In my experience as a teacher I've found that every single alum has unique gifts she could share with current students and the college as a whole. Is there anything those of us working for the institution in this era could do to inspire you to believe you had ways to contribute to the community? What might make this effort worth your while?
  •  Would you say that you are putting the Quaker Testimonies and Guilford's core values to work in the world?  What does that look like? (community, diversity, equality, excellence, integrity, justice, stewardship)
  • How do Guilford's traditional values resonate in a high-tech world?
  • What is the relevance of a liberal arts education in a society that is results oriented and that places a high value on specialization?
  • How does your Guilford experience continue to manifest in your day-to-day life?
  • Are there any parts of life for which you've noticed you were better prepared by your Guilford education than your peers? Not as well prepared?

  • What could the institution do to enhance its ability to continue to build on its unique strengths?
